8 Weeks Old

Thu 29 Jun 2006

The magical 8 week mark! Our beautiful little person is doing well. She has worked out that she can see between the cot bars if she angles herself right and watch me vacuuming. She knows when I am in the same room and will search me out with her eyes.

We have been getting into 2 day routines ie the routine lasts for two days and then we have a new routine but hey it isn’t boring! But one thing she is consistent on is waking up at around 7am each day. She is a good little alarm clock on that front.

Lucy was immunised this morning against various diseases including rota virus. How was it? The rota virus was easy as it was an oral vaccine. The others were injections into her legs. She screamed for about a minute and then 5 minutes later was asleep in my arms while I filled in the paperwork. A very brave girl! I have the baby Panadol on hand but she seems fine so far.

This week:

  • Babysat by Grandma and Grandpa on Saturday night

  • A family walk of 3.72km around Sutherland (I know this because the GPS is now attached to the pram)
  • Bible Study at our house and I cooked dinner! I did most of it between 8:30-10am when Lucy was asleep but it felt good that it all went ok
  • Andrew had less sleep than me on Monday night after watching the soccer
  • Graduated from Baby Health Clinic (Lucy weighs in at 5.26kg)
  • Auntie Lynda’s farewell dinner before heading off to Canada
  • Learnt to knit at craft group (the non-European method!)
  • We have a new microwave and the air conditioning is installed. It’s bliss!

Having met some newborns in the past week (hello Jackson, Maisie and Shelby) Lucy seems huge! It just goes to show that time does go very fast and babies grow very quickly.
Lucy is now the length of her baby bath when she stretches her legs out (in fact a bit longer as she had to be diagonal to fit in properly) The doctor measured her on Tuesday at 62cm!

This week Lucy started sleeping in her cot (and we didn’t get a photo!) We had been using the bassinet that attaches to the pram as her bed but now that she is getting bigger we thought we would transition to the cot. Things have gone well so far but as we’ve discovered changing the sheets on the cot is a lot more difficult than changing the sheets in the bassinet. Whether in the cot or the bassinet, Lucy still doesn’t like going to sleep in her bed during the day! She looks up at me with her eyes filled with tears willing me to pick her up and it’s hard to leave her there. However she seems to have taken well to sleeping in the cot.

Another first is that the four of us went walking. Yes, the four of us – Andrew, Fiona, Lucy and Sophie. Poor Sophie has been neglected and she relished the chance to get out and about, running around the park and playing with some
toddlers. Lucy enjoyed it too but given that she mostly slept she didn’t
see too much of Sutherland. Mum and Dad enjoyed stopping in at Gloria Jeans for hot chocolates.

We had a very bad day on Monday with lots of screaming and crying (in fact the worst day so far). However everything was back to normal by Tuesday and by Wednesday we were enjoying 20 minute giggling sessions. Lucy must have been having a growth spurt as she was pretty unsettled for a couple of days.

What happened this week?

  • Dinner with Danie, Konrad and Jackson
  • Babysat with Nan
  • 6 week appointment with the paediatrician (who said Lucy was VERY alert and she passed all her tests)
  • Got air conditioning installed in the house (well, in progress anyway… Lucy seems to enjoy all the drilling and hammering. It must be that she heard all of Andrew’s work in utero)
  • Received Fiona’s last pay packet for a while
  • And in the latest news the microwave is busted. I think our appliances have decided to gang up on us and break down one by one.

Lucy is very well and is starting to fill out a bit. She has chubby little cheeks and has moved up a clothing size to 00. She is starting to lose some hair so she has a bit of a Mohawk style happening. She is smiling quite a bit as you can see from the photos but mainly at the mobile and sometimes at mum.

We had another busy week!
Lucy and Fiona did the following:

  • Met with our new accountant
  • Went to the movies at Cronulla to see ‘The Break up’ (at the babes in arms session they turn the sound up really loud and there are heaps of prams crowding up the foyer area)
  • Had lunch with Kelly and Hamish
  • Attended the congregational meeting
  • Ate Yum Cha with Grandma and Grandad
  • Visited the baby health clinic (4.9kg)
  • Went to craft group
  • Watched the Socceroos win their first world cup game
  • Discovered the delights of ‘The Office’ US style

Andrew put in a concrete slab in the back yard and worked on the cry room at church amongst various other projects like an internet phone.

I nearly forgot to write the blog today! In between emptying the dishwasher, cooking dinner and having a shower this morning I suddenly remembered that I needed to write something in these 2 hours of quiet time.

Lucy is very well and very beautiful. She is gaining weight (though not as much as in previous weeks) and seems to be growing in length rapidly. She has grown out of several jumpsuits and it’s sad to be putting them into storage already. She loves her playgym especially the smiley star at the top which she laughs and giggles at whether or not it is playing music. She is sleeping brilliantly at night and
in fact I had to wake her up at 5:15am this morning for a feed (but it’s a pity I woke up at 2am and 4am as well!) She loves having her nappy off but this has led to disastrous consequences and much washing despite several precautions.

This week Andrew and I went out for dinner twice. The first time Lucy was babysat by Nan and Grandpa (and screamed for 2 hours) and the second time Lucy came along and was
an angel. Here are the three of us at Lots after church where we enjoyed some fabulous honey chicken, BBQ pork and young coconut drinks.

Apart from painting the dog kennel (red, of course) it has been a pretty quiet week with the odd visit to the health clinic, MUM group and picking up photos from Harvey Norman. Andrew thankfully didn’t have
to go to the US for work this week and we have been enjoying family dinners (and some lunches) at home.

4 weeks old!! Time has gone so fast. We started the month of May eagerly awaiting the birth of our baby and have ended the month with a 4.635kg bundle of joy. She gave us her first smile during the week and in general is a very happy contented baby. She continues to sleep very well at night and we are starting to get into a routine during the day.

We finally celebrated Andrew’s 30th birthday with a big pizza party on the weekend. Everyone brought one or two ingredients for the pizzas which made the set up a lot easier than usual! Thanks to Dave & Kel for their tireless work behind the scenes to help get things organised. Andrew had a ball and didn’t want the party to ever end. Here’s a photo of Andrew and Lucy in their ‘Andrew’s Pizza’ gear
(I was also surprised with an embroidered polar fleece jacket) Andrew made sure that the gate and sign were in situ before the party so that everyone had to pass through it to get to the pizza oven. Andrew says a big thank you to everyone that came on the day.

So the week was spent getting ready for the party (making Devils Food Cupcakes and mandarin tarts and cleaning) and then recovering from the party by sleeping in. Lucy was an angel allowing us to set up and clean up without too much fuss.

In other news Grandad has been banned from wearing aftershave around Lucy as she really doesn’t like it! Poor Grandad!
