How y’all doin’? We are in Wilmington North Carolina and today is Thanksgiving. We’ve had deep fried turkey, sweet potato and cranberry sauce. Everyone is super friendly and I am ‘as cute as a button’.
It took us about 28 hours to get here. We flew to Los Angeles (13 hrs), Charlotte (4.5 hrs), and Wilmington (1 hr). Each plane was smaller than the previous one. The first flight was with qantas but the others were with US Airways – no bassinet, no food and no free headphones. My bananas were confiscated by US customs and we had a long wait to get through immigration. Mum and dad got fingerprinted and photographed but I didn’t need to. I slept well on the first and third flights but didn’t enjoy the second one as it was so hot and boring.
Day one
- After sleeping in late (until 11am!) we visited some childcare centres. 2 excellent ones and 2 mediocre ones.
- We had lunch at Moe’s. It’s a mexican fastfood outlet where the staff randomly shout out ‘welcome to moes’ about every 2 minutes. Food pretty average.
- We shopped at a 24 hour Walmart! Great baby food but some very very weird food stuffs. We bought mallomars, chunky monkey icecream, and reeses dessert bar mix.
Thanksgiving
We were kindly invited over to the Monetta family home for Thanksgiving. We watched tampa bay vs dallas NFL. I was very well behaved by having a long nap. The food was awesome. So many desserts including pumpkin pie, apple pie and funfetti cake. Our first thanksgiving was great!!
Until next week, keep safe.

Terrific Thursday (or Throwing Up Thursday) – we had lots of fun playing with balls, singing and rolling around on the floor
Fun Friday – swimming was fun esp. singing ‘the wheels on the bus’. Andrew was out all night on a harbour cruise. Lucy had a very unsettled night
Birthday Saturday – we celebrated Grandad and Grandma’s birthdays with a big lunch including roast pork, apple sauce and crackling! Chocolate brownies for dessert. Lucy wore her other beautiful Monsoon dress for the first time and was able to sit up and pose for photos.
Church Sunday – we went to church in the morning and then cleaned out more of the garage in the afternoon. Some boxes had been moved from the unit to this house and had not been opened!!!
Immunisation Monday – Lucy had her third lot of injections. She still screamed when she got the needles but the second one had a quite delayed scream. She has two red bumps on her legs now and was a bit grizzly. However she slept through bible study where Steve cooked up an Indian feast.
City Tuesday – we spent the day in the city visiting CBA friends. Lucy was so well behaved esp. given the lack of sleep and gave high 5’s on cue
Hairy Wednesday – we had mothers groups which entailed a jewellery and candle party. Lucy lay on the blanket with the other babies. She started playing with the hair of the little girl next to her and massaging her head. She then reached out her other hand and started playing the hair of the little boy on the other side but soon realised his hair was long enough for grabbing and pulling! After having her hands removed she started playing with her own hair!
We’re off travelling again for the next few blog entries so Lucy will post from Wilmington, NC. Due to the difference in the time zone the entries will probably be late so don’t panic if they’re not there!

It’s been an up and down week with Lucy. And no she’s not teething! I think its partly food, and partly growing and changing routine. She is eating quite a bit of solid food now. Lucy tried avocado and peach this week but they didn’t seem to agree with her. She ate them happily but they came up pretty soon afterwards and she was grizzly.
Lucy can do high 5’s! She puts her hand in the air with a flat palm and waits for you to tap her with your palm. Also during the week Lucy’s car seat was finally turned around. She loves it! And I love it too because now I can put the passenger seat back.
Grandad came over to work on the deck and then Grandma came over to have lunch with us. Lucy got a train, blocks and keys for her ½ birthday. I think Grandad had more fun with the train than Lucy.
During the week I was feeling a bit down and jealous of Andrew that he can just leave the house for SWAG without worrying about anything and take just his keys and go (and then come back for his forgotten box of tricks). So it was so nice for two angels to turn up at my house and cook dinner for me. (No lean cuisine for me!) Not only did they cook dinner for me, the main ingredients was something that has only entered the Thoms house once or twice before – prawns! We had prawn ravioli!!!! Thank you Channah and Kellie, it was a great night
We got a parcel from Peru this week from Auntie Kat. Lucy got a gorgeous llama jacket, leather sandals, pink havianas, and a white cotton dress. Andrew’s balaclava (complete with eye, nose and mouth holes) was a sight to be seen and I got a baby alpaca scarf and earrings.
Andrew and I did the tank stream tour on Sunday. We were worried it would be cancelled due to the rain but it was a blessing in disguise because it meant that there was water running through the tunnel. We also had lunch at The Summit, apparently the world’s largest revolving restaurant. We were a bit sad Lucy wasn’t there because she had been with us at the revolving restaurant in Berlin in the TV Tower. As part of Sydney Open, we also checked out the vault at CBA and I finally got to see the stained glass ceiling (which is bizarre because I had worked in that building for about 4 years!!) Lucy played with Nan and Grandpa for the afternoon.

Lucy is 26 weeks or ½ year old today! She will be officially 6 months on Saturday but we are still celebrating today. Here is Lucy with her new toy mouse that we bought her at KaDeWe in Berlin. It is for kinder ½+. We also got her some blocks that have lots of colour and movement.

Lucy can sit up by herself! Only for about 10 seconds at a time but she now has enough balance to manage on her own. It was very exciting for Andrew and I to see her do it on Saturday.
Lucy has a new highchair. She loves sitting in it as she has a better view of what is going on around the place. She is also good at throwing her books on the floor so that I can pick them up for her.
Lucy tried banana this week (as well as prunes for reasons you can imagine). She’s not sure on banana yet but she is coming around to it. Still loves broccoli, carrot and rice cereal.
This week has been one of crying. Crying at night, crying during the day and crying during the movies so that we only saw the first 20 minutes of Boytown and then had to leave. Continuous sleep is at a premium and Andrew is out and about a lot. I don’t know how single parents do it!
Last weekend we drove down the coast to Shoalhaven Heads and Currarong. Here are a few photos of us at the beach. See you next week.
