Look you can see my teeth!!
Just a quick update this week as not much has really changed (Lucy is still gorgeous) but here are the new things:
- Lucy loves quiche, raspberries and grapes
She has carpet burns on her knees from crawling too fast
She is still hysterical when put in her cot but usually only lasts for 30 seconds
We went to the lapsit program at the library which she loved. Unfortunately it was the last week for the term and we have to wait for June for it to start up again.
Lucy can ‘cruise’ along the window frame but not very fast!
Only one week left until Lucy turns 1! Here is her birthday party invitation.

And some other gorgeous photos:

We’ve had some big progress by Lucy this week. She can say a couple more words including “do†for dog (pronounced “doughâ€), “no†for you guessed it no, and “ba†for ball. We are working on “car†but she hasn’t worked that out yet. Andrew says we should work on “truck†because there are far more trucks, SUV’s and vans than cars on the road. Lucy can stand at the window in the lounge room and look down on the road and watch the cars go by. She likes to wave to them!
Lucy has started eating sandwiches for lunch. Not a big achievement I hear you say given that most other babies her age have been eating them for ages. But we have been trying to avoid wheat and dairy for a while. I discovered tapioca bread at the co-op so Lucy has been eating almond butter sandwiches ever since and loving them! She has also switched over to drinking regular milk (difficult to find here because everything is low fat, reduced fat or vitamin D added milk). She quickly started refusing formula and is only drinking milk now. But it can’t be cold from the fridge, must be room temperature or warm!
Sleeping seems to be getting under control. She slept through the night apart from 2 nights this week but she hasn’t had any morning sleeps until yesterday because we have been too busy. Last couple of days has seen a lot of crying about going to bed. The situation is changing daily so I’ll just leave it at that.
Lucy has discovered the door stoppers in our apartment which are long springs. They wobble around and make a cool ‘twang’ when you play with them! Her obsession with dogs (and cats) continues. She loves all animals and makes a very funny excited face when she sees them.
Unfortunately Lucy hates her car seat. She is at the smallest recommended weight for it so she looks very small in it and there is no padding. This means she can’t fall asleep in it. I think we are going to buy another one as it is a very horrible situation having her scream and arch around when being buckled up. And I need her to be able to go to sleep when she’s tired.
I have been out shopping for birthday presents for Lucy (and Andrew!) Such cool kids stuff available and not too expensive. I have investigated a shop called learning express (which incidentally had ‘Khet’) and Toys ‘r’ us. Just need to buy lots of wrapping paper now. We’ve picked out a birthday cake and just need to organize a little afternoon tea, hopefully in a nearby park.
Lucy has been very social, talking and waving to everyone we meet. The other day she was especially vocal so I said to her “who are you looking at”. A voice said “She’s looking at me” and a man turned around. He was wearing a cap and the man looked like Grandad! So I mentioned that to him and he said to Lucy “I’m not your grandaddy!” And even though he didn’t sound like Grandad Lucy still wasn’t convinced and kept vigorously waving.

We’ve made it to Wilmington NC albeit a bit later than we expected! Lucy started out the trip with some sneezing and coughing but it disappeared quickly.
As per usual Lucy was a very well behaved girl throughout our journey including 3 plane flights and lots of waiting around. She only lost it once (for about ½ hour) and thankfully that was at the hotel in LA. She is such a happy smiling baby that she continues to get us to the front of queues.
We squeezed Lucy into the bassinet on the plane but because it’s only a 69cm bed and she is now 76.5cm it was a tight fit and she didn’t enjoy it too much. She slept for 4 out of 5 hours on the second flight in daddy’s arms.
Lucy is waving goodbye to everyone and saying ‘ba’. She is very vigorous in her waving and I think is a sign that she has been saying goodbye a lot lately!
Most of the baby products at the supermarket appear to be exactly the same as Australian supermarkets except for the food which is so much better (here in the US surprisingly!) It is fitting that Lucy enjoyed a turkey and sweet potato dinner as her first meal here. She is eating lots of Gerber organic products. We’ve also been to Target and Toys ‘R’ Us to buy a car seat, high chair, safety gate, nappy bin etc etc. The range of baby products is endless and lots of the clothes can be tumble dried (a very welcome change!!!) We are going to have lots of fun!
On a more somber note, Lucy has had a few temper tantrums in the past week where she arches her back and slams her head around whilst screaming. Hhhmmmm…. She has been a bit clingy as well so maybe she does know that something big has happened in her world. Maybe she is missing all the spoiling from the grandparents!!!
She is quite the chatterbox saying bububububub, mumumumum and dadadadadad continually. She learnt how to drink from a straw so that she could drink poppas on the plane.
So all up Lucy is doing well. Apart from some waking up in the night she is starting to adjust. Unbelievably it’s nearly her 1st birthday so Andrew and I will have to plan something special.
By the way I forgot to mention last week that Lucy got her fringe cut. She looks much younger. Andrew said (and I quote) “you are never cutting our childrens hair ever again†as he fixed up the wonky cut that I made. Hey, she wiggles!!
To everyone back in Oz Lucy sends a big hug. No photos yet as we can’t upload them to the computer.

Lucy is well but the rest of us are stressed! Lucy is pulling herself up on anything she can put her hands on. She is a bit of a climber and can crawl up stairs. She loves the ocean but hates the feel of sand on her hands. She is a happy girl who is taking all the changes in her stride.
We’ve been in Cronulla since monday with a couple of days in Culburra. Our house is empty and there’s just a bit of painting and cleaning to be done. It’s all very strange.
Next time I write we’ll be in Wilmington. It seems like a lifetime away but i’m sure it will come around quickly. Until then stay safe and make sure you stay in contact via email.
