22 months old

Tue 04 Mar 2008

Here is the gorgeous Lucinda at 22 months old! It takes many many photos to get one this good where she is looking directly at the camera. There is so much to update you on Lucy I’m not sure where to begin but should start with the fact that we have had a very fun month. Another interesting fact is that Lucy is now more American than Australian having spent 10 months in Australia, 1 month in Europe and now 11 months in the US. We are commonly asked if she has an Australian accent but given that she can’t say words properly it is difficult to tell. However she does say ‘dad’ not ‘daaaad’ with a southern drawl.

Lucy had a growth spurt during the month lasting 3 days. She slept for 13 hours at night plus 3 hours during the day and ate a lot of food including 3 bowls of tuna pasta for dinner one night (shouting ‘more more’ after each bowl). Her pot belly grew SO large. She is now 90cm tall and is using size 6 nappies (the biggest ones!) We are buying clothing for her in sizes 3 or 4, shoe size is 7.5 + wide width.

Sickness this month was fairly minor with just a cold but we did have a split lip (and lots of blood) when Lucy came down the stairs without holding on to the railing. Some hugs, kisses and a little ice cream eased everything!

Lucy moved up a class at daycare to the ‘young twos’. She visited the class for a couple of weeks and fitted in very well. During February they learnt about firemen, policemen, doctors and nurses. Lucy has taken this on board by taking her temperature with anything to hand (spoons, pens) and is fascinating by fire engines (We bought her a fire engine jigsaw and on the same day saw three fire engines with sirens blaring speeding past us – Lucy was thrilled!) In class they read lots of books, paint and play outside. Lucy is still refusing to wear a painting smock but we let her paint anyway.

Lucy reads the bible with Dad every morning by telling Dad to ‘sit’ and ‘read’ ‘bible’. She loves to pray and often asks for ‘more’ prayer. She prays anywhere, in the bath, in the car and in bed. At the table if she’s hungry she repeatedly says amen throughout the prayer to try to get it to finish faster so that she can eat. In Sunday School she learnt about Jesus healing the blind man so for the next few days Lucy pretended to be blind. This was quite funny during meals where she would feed herself with her eyes closed but got dangerous when she started running around with her eyes closed. It all ended in tears when she tried to go around a corner at full speed pushing the stroller and hit the window sill.

A new stage for Lucy is extreme jealousy of other children being with her mum! Whilst she is happy to share her toys at playdates with anyone she won’t share her mum. I’m not allowed to touch or talk to other small children without Lucy running over and climbing on top of me saying ‘mine’. Part of this stage means she only wants mum and not dad. She says to Andrew ‘bye bye’ in increasing volume and firmness when she wants him to leave the room. At least it’s not ‘go away’ but it’s still not very nice.

Lucy continues to be very fashion conscious. She likes to choose her clothes and is very particular with combinations. They mostly work but she wouldn’t listen when I told her socks and thongs don’t go together! She now likes her thick winter coat and mittens (a little late for Seattle!) and is happy to wear them around the house.

Lucy loves to kiss! She kisses goodnight, she blows kisses and she kisses sore body parts on herself and anyone else that asks. A kiss from mum stops all pain and tears instantly. If I’m not readily accessible she kisses herself and then picks herself up and keeps going.

Other developments:

  • In the car the other day I turned on the radio and the song ‘Ice Ice Baby’ came on. I turned around to look at Lucy and she was doofing her head in time with the beat! It was so funny and I wish I had had a video camera with me.
  • After reading ‘Goodnight moon’ every night before bed for over a year Lucy decided she didn’t want to hear it anymore and we haven’t read it since.
  • Lucy can recognise and say the letters A, B, O, L and G. Whilst she can say the letter L, she can’t say L’s in words for example instead of saying ‘blue’ she says ‘bue’, instead of saying ‘black’ she says ‘back’. When asked her name this month she said it was ‘Wuwu’ (Lulu)
  • Some nights we give her the choice of a bath or shower. She knows what she wants and after dinner will tell us whether she wants a ‘spa bath’ or ‘shower.
  • Whilst Lucy is saying quite a lot of words we understand she still talks a lot of jibberish. On our home days she doesn’t stop talking but if someone comes over she is instantly quiet. She is very shy around new people but once comfortable is best friends with them.

Videos for the month:

Lucy is at very fun and loveable stage. She laughs a lot which makes our home a lovely place to be. Check out the photo of Lucy laughing her head off above! This girl enjoys life and uses her energy store up each day. She loves to be a helper especially with mixing and sweeping and loves to be thrown in the air and held upside down. This girl has a zest for life!
